Anyone who’s a dog owner will tell you their pups are one of a kind, but for Anise Tooley and her boyfriend, Greg Fucich, from Mississippi, they have a truly unique claim to make about their furry family members!
The couple, who already had two pit bulls named Pearl and Harley, were excitedly awaiting a new litter of puppies. When they checked on the new mom and her babies, they were shocked to discover something unexpected: one of the newborn puppies was green!
The Green-Furred Pup
At first, Tooley didn’t even notice the odd color, as the green puppy was the first to be born. It wasn’t until Pearl gave birth to another puppy that the couple realized something was different. The first-born pup stood out – not because of its size or features, but because of its bright green fur.
“I didn’t notice at first she was a different color. Then when she had another one, and another one, I’m like, the first one is a different color,” Tooley said in an interview with WLOX News.
The puppy had the same pink ears and nose as the others, and was the same size, but the green coat was a major surprise. Tooley and Fucich were stunned, having never encountered such a rare color in a puppy before.
A Green Mystery Explained
Intrigued by their discovery, the couple turned to the internet for answers. After some research, they learned that the unusual green color was caused by a green bile pigment called biliverdin. This pigment was present in high amounts in the puppy’s birth sac, resulting in her distinctive green fur. Thankfully, they found out that the condition was harmless to the puppy.
Naming Fiona: A Fun Twist
With their puppy’s unique color in mind, Tooley and Fucich decided to have a little fun with the situation. They named her Fiona, after Princess Fiona from the Shrek movies, a character known for her distinct green appearance. The playful name immediately caught the public’s attention, and Fiona became an internet sensation.
Fiona’s Story Spreads
Fiona’s story spread quickly across the country, attracting heartwarming reactions from people who were charmed by her unique birth. As Fiona continues to grow, she’s sure to win even more hearts, whether her green fur fades or not.
Fiona’s Green Fur Isn’t So Rare
While Fiona’s green fur may seem extraordinary, she’s not alone. Another puppy, a Golden Retriever named Shamrock, also surprised the world with a green hue caused by the same biliverdin pigment. Shamrock’s color eventually faded, but his unique appearance also captured plenty of attention.
For Fiona, however, her name and green fur will always be part of her charm. Whether her coat fades as she grows, she’ll always be remembered as Fiona, the Shrek-inspired pit bull, known for her one-of-a-kind birth story. It’s a memory that will last a lifetime!
